Michelangelo Legend is an iconic restaurant in the historic neighbourhood of San Telmo, dating back to 1849 and converted into a tango venue in 1967. This place offers a unique experience that combines traditional Argentine cuisine with live tango and folklore performances.

The interior décor features ornate details and historic architecture that transport visitors to the past. The main hall, called Catedral, can accommodate up to 240 people and includes a wine cellar for tastings.

The menu includes classic Argentine dishes such as ribeye steak, milanesa and soufflé gnocchi, accompanied by Malbec or Torrontés wines. Legendary artists such as Astor Piazzolla, Roberto Goyeneche and Susana Rinaldi have performed on its stage. It is an unmissable destination for tourists and tango lovers.

El Querandí was founded as a bar in 1920 in a mansion built in 1867 in San Telmo. It was restored in 1992 and is considered a “Living Testimony of the City’s Memory” by the Museum of the City of Buenos Aires and a Notable Bar by the Subsecretariat of Culture.

Its architecture features an art deco façade, Solomonic columns, chequered floors, crests and arches that invite visitors to step back in time. With a capacity for 200 people, the romantic atmosphere remains present in its wood panelling and carved wood details.

The dinner show performance traces the history of tango in five historical segments: “Origins”, “Immigrants and the Suburbs”, “Gardel, the Tango Song”, “Salons and Milongas”, and “Modernism, Astor Piazzolla”. The show features a band of four musicians and three singers, in addition to the dancers — some of whom are world tango champions.

It offers a three-course à la carte dinner with more than twenty regional dish options accompanied by wines. The show begins at 22:15 and lasts 75 minutes. It is ideal for tasting typical Argentine dishes while watching a show of international quality.

Bar Sur

Bar Sur is the oldest tango house in San Telmo, inaugurated in 1967 by Ricardo Montesino. This mythical cultural site was declared a Notable Bar of Buenos Aires, a distinction given to places considered Cultural Heritage of the City.

With its intimate atmosphere and the colonial architecture of San Telmo as a backdrop, the venue became a meeting point for musicians, dancers and tango lovers. Portraits on the walls and antique ceiling fans preserve its original essence, immersing visitors in the full experience of a night in a traditional tanguería.

With a limited capacity of only 35 people per show, it offers a premium experience that combines history, gastronomy and art. There are three daily performances featuring more than 10 live artists who recreate the golden age of tango. As expected, the standout dish is beef empanadas, a classic of Argentine gastronomy.

As a curious fact, this bar has been chosen as a filming location and a meeting place for international artists such as Chayanne, Liza Minnelli and Antonio Banderas.

El Viejo Almacén

El Viejo Almacén is a traditional tango house in San Telmo, founded on 9 May 1969 by the singer Edmundo Rivero in a colonial building. The building was constructed in 1769 during the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata and was declared a Site of Cultural Interest by the City Council in 1982.

The venue offers a three-course dinner with an à la carte menu. Some options include sirloin steak with green leaves and crispy spiced potatoes, and trout with herb and port sauce with steamed vegetables. Drinks during dinner include one bottle of wine for every two people, soft drinks and/or mineral water.

The show, which lasts 1 hour and 50 minutes, includes music, poetry and dance, with 20 artists on stage: two tango singers, eight dancers and the El Viejo Almacén sextet performing the most recognised Buenos Aires melodies.

Hugo Marcel, the main singer and one of the icons of tango, delivers a passionate and highly personal performance. In addition to the excellent dancing, the quality of the quintet’s musical interpretation stands out — a group of true tango veterans with years of experience. A place that combines show and gastronomy in an exceptional way.

Todo Mundo

Todo Mundo is a restaurant-bar located in a 1913 Italian-style building in the emblematic Plaza Dorrego of San Telmo. With more than 40 years of history, it has become a classic venue visited by locals and tourists from all over the world.

Its name refers to the idea that “everyone” has visited Plaza Dorrego, especially on Sundays when the famous antiques market takes place. On Sunday and Monday evenings they present their show “Tango y Milonga para todo el mundo”. When visiting, do not miss the ribeye steak, considered one of the best in the city.

The establishment is open Monday to Sunday from 9 am until 3–5 am, making it an ideal place to enjoy the characteristic movement of the square and the bohemian life of San Telmo late into the night.

Taconeando

On 15 August 1979, Beba Bidart inaugurated “Taconeando”, her elegant venue in the heart of San Telmo, making it a meeting place for tango performers and lovers of this beautiful and sensual music.

Today Taconeando offers a three-course dinner. The menu includes a starter such as empanadas or a cured-meat platter, a main course that may include sirloin steak with seasonal salad or rustic fried potatoes; chicken ballotin with fries; or pasta such as ravioli, agnolotti or vermicelli with various sauces, and finally a dessert. The dinner also includes wine.

The performance features 14 artists on stage: a live orchestra, dancers and singers. It is a blend of tradition and modernity, ideal for those seeking a complete perspective on this complex and varied dance. The dancers perform on a low stage surrounded by tables, making guests feel as though they are in one of the dance halls of the past.

The show is a tribute to the great composers and authors of tango, from Carlos Gardel to Astor Piazzolla, and begins at 10:00 pm. Dinner begins around 8:30 pm. The venue operates from Thursday to Sunday. As a tribute to Beba Bidart, at the end of the performance the audience is invited to dance, which is one of its most distinctive features.

It is one of the most traditional tango venues in Buenos Aires, with a more intimate atmosphere than the large tourist productions.

El Aljibe

El Aljibe Tango Show in San Telmo is a unique cultural experience that combines music, dance and tradition in an authentic and welcoming setting. Located in one of the most emblematic neighbourhoods of Buenos Aires, it offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in the magic of tango, its history and its essence. It is located in a fully restored conventillo that provides an intimate atmosphere where the spirit of tango can be felt.

El Aljibe offers a three-course dinner (starter, main course and dessert). The menu includes options such as traditional empanadas with knife-cut beef, vegetable soup with seasonal vegetables and croutons, pumpkin soup with parmesan cheese and croutons. Main dishes include a traditional 300-gram grilled sirloin steak, grilled catch of the day with mashed potatoes, capers and spinach leaves, or spinach and ricotta ravioli. For drinks, guests may choose one bottle of wine for every two people or two drinks per person (beer, soft drinks and mineral water).

The show includes a traditional tango orchestra, two tango singers, three dance couples, music from the Altiplano and a folklore ballet with more than 30 talented artists on stage performing tango and folklore shows. The show lasts one hour and also includes a boleadoras and folklore performance. Dinner begins at 19:00 and the show starts at 20:15.

It is a very complete venue that combines excellent Argentine gastronomy with a varied tango and folklore show.
