Your Guide to Nightlife in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is world-famous for having some of the best nightlife on the planet. And it is a reputation entirely deserved. The porteño night doesn’t begin until 11pm, doesn’t warm up until 1am and doesn’t reach its climax until four or five in the morning. It is a city that sleeps little and happily, where the night is a territory of freedom, creativity and celebration.

Buenos Aires’ electronic music club scene has international recognition. Niceto Club in Palermo is perhaps the most emblematic: its dance floor has hosted the world’s finest DJs and its Club 69 night on Thursdays is a cult classic blending electronic music, drag, performance and art into a spectacle without equal. Crobar, on the riverside, is the reference megaclub for large-scale electronic nights. Bahrein, in the city centre, combines different musical genres across its multiple rooms.

Nocturnal tango is a completely different experience from the tourist show. The authentic milongas of San Telmo, Almagro and Boedo are spaces where porteños dance in earnest, with an intensity and elegance that can only be learned after years of practice. Club Gricel, La Viruta, Salón Canning and Niño Bien are among the most celebrated milongas. Many offer beginner classes before the milonga itself begins.

Palermo is the epicentre of Buenos Aires’ young, creative nightlife. Its bars open late, close at dawn and offer a blend of musical genres — indie, cumbia, reggaeton, hip hop, jazz — that reflects the diversity and eclecticism of the porteño cultural scene. Calle Thames, Calle Armenia and the area around Plaza Serrano are the most concentrated zones.

Buenos Aires’ LGBT scene is vibrant, open and celebrated. The city was the first in Latin America to recognise equal marriage in 2010 and its LGBTQ+ community has a dynamic nightlife of its own, concentrated particularly in Palermo and Almagro. Amerika, Flux and Pride Café are among the best-known venues.

For those who prefer a more sophisticated evening, Buenos Aires’ rooftop bars and hotel bars are a first-rate proposition. The rooftops of the Alvear Icon, the Faena and Hotel Madero offer design cocktails, ambient music and spectacular views of the city at night. A drink high above the city with Buenos Aires lit up at your feet is a moment difficult to forget.

Tango shows for visitors also deserve their place: Piazzolla Tango, Señor Tango and Complejo Tango offer professional, high-quality performances combining dance, live music, dinner and the history of tango in a format accessible to all audiences.

The Buenos Aires night is endless and generous. But be prepared — in this city, sleep can always wait.
