Top Attractions in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is a city that accumulates wonders. Every neighbourhood hides an attraction worthy of your time, your attention and your camera. From historic monuments to contemporary architectural masterpieces, from internationally renowned museums to surprising green spaces in the heart of the city, the attractions of Buenos Aires are as varied as the character of its people.

The almost obligatory starting point is Plaza de Mayo. Founded in 1580, this square is Argentina’s symbolic epicentre: facing it stand the Casa Rosada — the seat of national government — the Metropolitan Cathedral and the Cabildo. Every stone, every column, tells a part of Argentina’s story. On Thursdays, the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo continue their weekly march, a ritual that is itself a living testament to the country’s collective memory.

The Teatro Colón is another attraction beyond dispute. Inaugurated in 1908, this palace of opera and ballet is considered one of the finest in the world for its acoustics and architectural beauty. Guided tours take you through gilded halls, velvet-lined boxes and backstage areas steeped in history. If you have the chance to attend a performance, don’t hesitate for a moment.

The Recoleta Cemetery is, without question, one of Buenos Aires’ most singular attractions. It is not merely a resting place: it is a labyrinth of fascinating mausoleums, a museum of funerary architecture and an open book on the history of Argentina’s most influential families. Eva Perón’s tomb is the most visited, but dozens of others tell stories equally as captivating.

La Boca and El Caminito are essential for understanding porteño identity. This working-class neighbourhood of Italian immigrants transformed poverty into art: houses painted with colourful corrugated iron sheets, street murals and the festive spirit of the place create a visually unique experience. Round off the visit with a tour of the Boca Juniors stadium, La Bombonera — a true temple of world football.

MALBA, the Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires, is the city’s great contemporary cultural attraction. Its permanent collection includes works by Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Antonio Berni and dozens of artists who defined 20th-century Latin American art. Temporary exhibitions and an arthouse cinema programme make it a destination of the highest cultural order.

Puerto Madero offers a different Buenos Aires — modern, luminous and polished. The Puente de la Mujer, the Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve — a remarkable natural haven just metres from the city centre — and the restored docks with their designer restaurants and bars form a circuit that blends nature, architecture and gastronomy impeccably.
