Travel to Buenos Aires by Car

Arriving in Buenos Aires by car is perfectly feasible from anywhere in the country, thanks to the extensive motorway and national road network that converges on the city. Buenos Aires is connected to Argentina’s main cities via well-maintained road corridors, and the access routes from Buenos Aires province and Greater Buenos Aires are numerous and straightforward — though traffic during peak hours can be intense.

Main Access Routes into Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires has several road access points from different parts of the country:

Autopista Panamericana (Route 9)

The main access from the north of the country and from northern Greater Buenos Aires. It connects the city with Rosario, Córdoba and the rest of northern Argentina, entering the city from the north and providing quick access to Palermo, Recoleta and the city centre.

Autopista del Oeste (Route 7)

The access from the west: Luján, Mercedes and the western Buenos Aires province. It also connects with Mendoza and the Cuyo region via National Route 7.

Autopista Ricchieri / Autopista 25 de Mayo

The main access from Ezeiza Airport and the southern suburbs of Greater Buenos Aires. It feeds into the city centre via the Autopista 25 de Mayo.

La Plata — Buenos Aires Motorway (Route 1)

The access from the south, La Plata and the Buenos Aires coastal zone.

Getting Around Buenos Aires by Car

Driving within Buenos Aires can be challenging, particularly in the city centre and during rush hours. The city has a well-organised grid layout but with many one-way streets, which requires planning. The use of GPS or navigation apps such as Google Maps or Waze is strongly recommended.

Parking in Buenos Aires

Parking is paid in most of the city centre and commercial neighbourhoods. You can choose between covered car parks — of which there are a large number in every neighbourhood — or street parking where permitted. In high-demand areas such as Palermo, Recoleta and the city centre, covered car parks are the most practical and secure option.

Toll Roads

The motorway access routes into Buenos Aires have tolls. The most significant are on the Autopista Panamericana, the Autopista del Oeste and the Autopista Ricchieri. Payment can be made in cash or with the TELEPASE card, the electronic toll system that allows automatic payment without stopping the vehicle.
